GeoCoin is a real-world scavenger hunt rewarding players with cryptocurrency. It was the first project to combine geocaching and blockchain technology, and operates on the Ubiq Network. Users can drag and drop GEO on the map for others to "mine" through a process referred to as Proof-of-Location (PoL); once users get within 5 meters (15 feet), they will collect the GEO.
The project was first launched by Tobler in January 2015 as a Qubit blockchain based on Proof-of-Work, and in 2016 was passed onto current lead dev Weifa, an outdoors enthusiast. GeoCoin migrated to the Ubiq Network using the ERC-20 token standard in January 2018, and has continued to grow with the community. They are currently developing NFT functionality.
