Hive (ticker: HIVE) is a fork of the Steem blockchain, which was originally designed around a popular Reddit-like social network called Steemit. The community decided to split after what was perceived as a hostile takeover by TRON founder Justin Sun[1]. His acquisition of the Steem company exacerbated concerns regarding their 80% premine and subsequently excessive power. When community-appointed witnesses voted almost unanimously to freeze his coins in response, Justin Sun retaliated by colluding with exchanges to vote with their customers' coins for new witnesses under his influence.
Hive is now used largely for blockchain gaming. Blockchain card game Splinterlands is the oldest and still the best-known. There is also a beer-brewing simulator called CryptoBrewMaster, as well as a cannabis farming simulator called HashKings coming out soon. On a technical level, it is still similar to Steem: to achieve network consensus, token holders vote for Witnesses who have the power to mint blocks and (with majority support among each other) change network rules.
